The Alatsee

Mystical waters

The mountain lake, 12 hectares in size and up to 32 m deep, with its crystal-clear water, forms the upper end of the Faulenbach valley, which stretches westwards from the banks of the Lech in Füssen. Situated in the middle of a nature reserve with lots of forest, the Alatsee offers two freely accessible bathing spots on the west and east shores as well as a refreshment stop in the hotel and restaurant of the same name located directly on the lake. A shady circular path leads around the lake, from which a well-developed hiking trail branches off to the Saloberalpe on the north-western shore. In addition to the hiking and cycle paths through the Faulenbach valley, from the Tyrolean village of Vils and from the Saloberalpe, only one road, which is open to cars, leads from the eastern shore of the Weißensee to the higher and more remote Alatsee. The mystical lake was also the setting for the Allgäu Kluftinger thriller "Seegrund" by the successful author duo Kobr and Klüpfel.
