An excursion into times long past
A total of 42 castles, ruins, town fortifications and palaces await little explorers in the Allgäu-Außerfern castle region! Many of them can be visited free of charge all year round. The visit can often be combined with a short hike or a visit to a museum. The castles and palaces in the region are therefore suitable as half-day or full-day excursion destinations for families.
Just around the corner
To the west of Hopfen am See you will find the Hopfen castle ruins - a very popular hiking destination for families. Numerous hiking trails lead past the Hopfen castle ruins. From the Vilser parking lot, you can reach the castle ruins in around 20 minutes on foot. Once at the top, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the surrounding mountain panorama of the Ammergau Alps and the Tannheim mountains. Inside the castle walls there is plenty of space for a picnic at a long table. If you feel like it, you can build a cairn. Which of you can build the highest?
To be seen from afar
The two medieval castle ruins of Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg lie like siblings on the hill that can be seen from afar. The castles are ideal excursion destinations for families with children. A short hike takes you to both ruins. A castle museum awaits you in Eisenberg, where you can marvel at the finds unearthed in the ruins.
Highest altitude in Germany
The ruins of Falkenstein Castle are located near Pfronten, approx. 15 km from Füssen. King Ludwig II wanted to build another castle here, similar to Neuschwanstein Castle, before he died. You can see what this castle would have looked like in a small exhibition room below the ruins. A small hiking trail also leads you to a Marian grotto. How do you get to the castle ruins? Either on foot or by car via a toll road.
