Füssen - the romantic soul of Bavaria
Where the Romantic Road, the Via Claudia Augusta and the German Alpine Road meet, lies historic Füssen in the Allgäu region. The dreams of two kings are enthroned at the gates of the town: Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. Füssen itself is home to more than 2000 years of living history, which began with the Romans and experienced its first heyday with Emperor Maximilian I. The second followed with the fairytale king Ludwig II.
Bavaria's highest town delights visitors with its medieval alleyways, historic buildings, the old town wall and much more. Numerous cozy cafés and restaurants, stores and squares invite you to take a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian zone.

The "Hohes Schloss" (Castle)
The “Hohes Schloss” (Castle) towers high above the town of Füssen. It was once the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg.
Today it houses the branch gallery of the Bavarian State Gallery and the Municipal Gallery of Paintings. The “Hohes Schloss” (Castle) in Füssen is one of the most important secular buildings of the German late Gothic period and is not only a sight to behold with its interior rooms and halls: unique illusion paintings can be discovered in the courtyard.
The former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang
The baroque complex of the former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang rises magnificently on the high banks of the Lech, which is one of the select group of "nationally valuable cultural monuments" declared by the German government. Its history dates back to the 8th century, when the town's patron saint Magnus founded a monastic cell on this site as a missionary. The architect Johann Jakob Herkomer finally gave the irregularly grown monastery complex a coherent appearance. Today, the former monastery houses the museum of the town of Füssen, the town administration and the parish church of St. Mang.
The Franciscan monastery with a view of the Quaglios
Don't miss the view of the rooftops of Füssen from Franziskanerplatz in front of the monastery, which reflects the old order of the estates: At the top, the High Castle as a symbol of secular power, below it the former St. Mang monastery as the spiritual center. At the foot of the imposing buildings are the town houses. The view is called Quaglio View after the Italian painter and master builder Domenico Quaglio, who painted this panorama in the 19th century.
