The Forggensee

Lake Forggensee at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most beautiful water sports and leisure areas in the Bavarian Alpine foothills. No one can tell when the water level is full: Lake Forggensee is an artificial creation and only came into being in the 1950s with the construction of the dam in Roßhaupten. In spring 1954, the Forggensee was completely dammed for the first time. The 12 km long and up to 3 km wide Lech reservoir north of Füssen offers good sailing, surfing and fishing opportunities as well as a number of beautifully situated bathing spots with a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains.

The history of Lake Forggensee

70 years of Forggensee - A reservoir is created

The Forggensee in Füssen is not actually a natural body of water, but was created in the 1950s as a reservoir for the Lech. It plays an important role as a head reservoir for the power stations located downstream and is crucial for regulating the flood levels of the wild river during the snowmelt. Interesting fact: Lake Forggensee only reaches its full reservoir level from June to mid-October. During this time, thanks to its light sandy subsoil from the surrounding limestone Alps, the lake displays a fascinating play of colors ranging from intense blue to light turquoise. As fresh water is constantly flowing into the Forggensee, it presents itself in a new shade of color every day, while in the winter months, visitors can discover the remains of the material pits of the Roman military road Via Claudia Augusta, which once ran there, in the drained lake basin. The shipping season on Lake Forggensee is limited to the period from June 1 to October 15, depending on the water level.
