Weißensee
The climatic health resort of Weißensee is surrounded by hills, meadows and mountains on the shores of the lake of the same name. The municipality of Weißensee, which consists of 24 districts, has been part of the town of Füssen since 1978. The name "Weißensee" probably comes from the shimmering white lime that is deposited in the depths of the Weißensee.
A brief insight into the history of Weißensee
A cave above the lake was archaeologically investigated in 1984-86 and 1988. The findings prove that people lived here around 11,500 years ago. An axe from the Bronze Age was excavated in the Wörth district in 1957. These exhibits prove that the Weißensee attracted people a very long time ago, even if there are no traces of permanent settlements.
The area around the Weißensee is one of the oldest possessions of the St. Mang monastery (probably as early as the middle of the 8th century).
In the Middle Ages, the "Lords of Weissensee" are mentioned, but they died out around 1200. The name "Gerungus de Wicense" (1167) has been handed down from this family. Speculation as to whether there was a castle in Weissensee has not yet been proven. For a long time, the elevation near today's parish church was considered a possible location.
The so-called "Hessenburg" stood in the Oberdeusch district. The first evidence of this can be found in a document from 1313, in which a "Heß uzz dem getusche" is mentioned. In 1332, the nobleman sold his property to the St. Mang monastery in Füssen. The castle itself became the property of the monastery of St. Mang in 1401 under the "Edlen von Tuschlin", Heinrich and Mangold. Between 1540 and 1570, the castle appears to have been inhabited once again, but it soon fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry. Today, only the castle mound remains as a reminder of this former fortification.
