Scientific study

Effectiveness of hydrotherapy for non-organic sleep disorders

Together with the Eggensberger therapy center in the Füssen district of Hopfen am See, the Kneipp health resort of Füssen researched the effect of water and Kneipp treatments on the autonomic nervous system and non-organic sleep disorders as part of a four-year scientific intervention study.

Kneipp water treatments

Against disturbed sleep

According to the 2017 DAK Health Report, ten percent of all illnesses in Germany can be attributed to sleep disorders. With Kneipp hydrotherapy, physical therapy offers validated applications to influence the autonomic nervous system and therefore presumably non-organic sleep disorders. Thus, the tried and tested Kneipp applications of the water doctor Sebastian Kneipp, such as Kneipp watering or washing, were the core of the joint study. The measures taken were to be used to investigate the improvement in sleep quality and the increase in performance, restfulness and well-being.

The planned outcome was the question of whether a twelve-week intervention with hydrotherapy can significantly influence non-organic sleep disorders more than a control group without intervention. Following the outpatient intervention study, a one-week teaching program was developed to provide participants with a validated hydrotherapy program for self-application at home. This enables people with non-organic sleep disorders to improve their health and increase their health literacy.

The study results

Salvation lies in the water!
  • The statistical evaluations of the questionnaires (PSQI and WHO-5) and the objective parameters (blood pressure, heart rate variability and rewarming) of the intervention group studied show a significant change compared to the waiting group.
  • The results of the study and the evaluation of the research questions and hypothesis pairs show that the twelve-week hydrotherapy program is effective.
  • The present results also show that the teaching week showed comparable improvements in the subjective and objective parameters of non-organic sleep disorders.
